As the title implies, the novel's central theme is guilt -- and the processes by which guilt is determined and punishments are imposed. Kafka seems, to me, to be exploring the epistemological ambiguity of guilt -- both the guilt that we feel and the guilt that we are told we SHOULD feel, by the people in our lives and the institutions around us. K. is constantly asking: They say I'm guilty, but who the hell are THEY?! What am I guilty of? And, ultimately: What have I done to deserve this?
K. efforts to appeal to his mysterious judges are constantly thwarted and sidetracked. His attempts to define the exact nature of his guilt and to prove himself innocent are never successful. This search for meaning and reconciliation leads him to various characters -- Lawyers, Artists, Priests, etc. -- that represent the many avenues through which moral and spiritual "truths" have been explored and imposed. Kafka wasn't one to contrive happy endings, and you can probably guess that K. never really finds the answers he's looking for, which is also true of Kafka -- as the unfinished nature of this novel attests.
