I have just logged on here for the first time and just read all of the posts to date. Some very interesting arguments all around.
The subject of this post, however, refers mainly to the "hounding" of some posters in response to inquiries from what seem to be new readers of Kafka, or even student who are being forced to read and write on Kafka. Having been such a student not so long ago, I can sympathize with those post-ers who are looking for the "easy answer"...the summary version of Kafka's works. It may not be that these readers are simply "fishing" for answers, as one responder accused; Kafka is extremely difficult to interpret...even to those who have read it fifteen times. The whole purpose of this site seems to be to enable readers to become engaged in Kafka writings and in interpretations thereof. To respond so viciously seems contrary to that purpose.
This is not to say that such post-ers should simply expect the easy answer either. If you can learn anything from Kafka, it is that it is the struggle that is important.... I struggled through The Castle the night before my paper was due...finished it in the early morning...and had to write on it immediately. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE!!! Reading The Castle is frustrating enough as is, struggling with K, through chapters of futility...
Another thing I noticed is the repetition of a request about comparing Poe and Kafka. This must be some sort of standard english class assignment. I really wish english teachers would either be more creative in their assignments, or more supportive of those who struggle with them (sometimes it is the brightest kids who struggle with such questions, too. Such assignments are often extremely ambiguous and/or overly restrictive)
On another note, has anyone read "Conversation With Kafka" by Gustav Jouch (I think...) This book has become my bible of sorts. Whenever I have needed wisdom, I have turned to it. I would love to discuss some passages from it if anyone has read it.
