The Truman Show and the story of the cat and mouse are very similar in that, like the mouse, Truman's world begins to fall apart and, in the end, he has two choices. When I first saw the entry 'truman show' I felt compelled to submit a response much the same as yours David B. Haglund. However, after rereading the story, I noticed the similarities. Yet, I do not believe that Truman was eaten by the cat. If anything he went into the trap. Despite all this crap about the mouse story, I really don't see how Kafka can be applied to the Truman Show. Yet, as I was thinking of my response to the first entry; rereading the story, I began to think of the fall of man. This, to me, seems very applicable to the movie. Truman's reality was threatened by another. True this new reality was that of the rest of the world, outside of the television show, but when Truman makes his choice he is still leaving behind the only reality he has known. Of course it's different because he understands his whole life was a television show and it did not happen so suddenly, as with the eating of the apple, yet he leaves behind his paradise, made for him by 'the creator', for our world. The only problem is that Truman's world was meant to resemble ours so, I suppose that he has already 'fallen'. I don't know. It just seems to me that Truman leaving a world in which everything was laid out for him, a sort of paradise, for the world of free choice etc., our world, makes him more like Adam than the damn mouse. When Adam and Eve fell from their paradise our world, the world which Truman fell into, was created. However, much of what they realized about their new found reality is embedded in Truman's mind: nakedness, right/wrong, blah,blah, blah..., due to the shows immitation of the rest of the world. As he leaves his world, he knows he can never come back. He is most certainly not upset about never being able to come back, or so it would seem in the movie, but, I mean, come on..., it's all he's ever known. Do you you really think that after he got out, met that woman, and went to Tahiti that he was never once was haunted by his past. That was his entire life. It's got to be extremely disturbing, just as Adam and Eve's realizations were. After all this junk, one thing remains. The fact that, like Adam and Eve, Truman was on his own. He had joined the world of the living dead. When Truman left the studio he died. I know this is a Kafka page, but man is condemned to freedom, eh? I believe this. To me this is the death that came from the fruit. It is the same for Truman.
