I think a common mistake in teaching the Metamorphosis is that teachers jump right into the symbolic, existential metaphors while missing the greatest attraction for students: the story's absolute hilarity. This guy has turned into a bug, and all he can think about is that he'll be late for work. There is nothing more absurd than that, and I think if you point out Kafka's wicked sense of humor, your students will gel to the story pretty quickly. On the other hand, concentrating immediately on Gregor As Symbol will kill the story in its tracks.
