For a start it's very hard to find his books. I've been a collector for twenty years and have barely a shelf of his works (another four on order from places around the world).
Secondly, he was an outsider from the literary world, and his enemies triumphed. Like Richard Aldington, his reputation could not survive the concerted silence of publishers, critics, academics, etc. (as described in Jeffrey Meyers' book, "The Enemy." Being seen as a Nazi sympathiser didn't help him).
Thirdly, he's not that easy to read. Many people still expect a book to reveal "what happens next." Lewis was half a century ahead of his time in creating literature for its own sake, to be read for its internal and depictive qualities (as in the works of B. S. Johnson). The "Apes of God" must be one of the most un-finished masterpieces upon which readers embark.
But don't despair. A few of us in the scattered outposts of the world of letters remain committed to the great W.L.
What I want to know is, why don't more people read Flann O'Brien's "At Swom-Two-Birds." Now there's the acme of literature in our century . . .
