Well, I've heard that the boy's illness in the story actually corresponds to the doctor's own repressed sexual feelings for the maid, Rose, bolstered by the fact that the wound is described as being "rose" colored. I don't know if this is totally justified, but it is a striking parallel, since the two names are the same even in the original German (Rosa, rosa). Another interpretation is that this story has to do with Kafka's (conjectured) attempts to get help for his problems through psychoanalysis, which, even though seen as a panacea for the world's ills, proved ineffective in his case ("Never again psychology!" he wrote), hence the doctor, although acclaimed by the townspeople, doesn't do anything for the boy. It is, of course, entirely possible, nay , probable, that everything I've read concerning the interpretation of this story is pure BS. Also, I really don't get the ending, where the doctor is slowly riding blindly around in the snow in the nude and saying "A false alarm on the night bell once answered--it cannot be made good, not ever." It totally has me in the dark. Any ideas?
