If you're Jewish, you are immune to the concept of automatic faith and salvation, and you are skeptical of the idea of a spirit that will save you in a flash. If you are a Jewish you (like Kafka) can look to the rich metaphorical heritage of history-slash-religion, in which God is essentially in an imperfect state existing in Exile, having withdrawn from the world in an act of unequaled compassion when God created us. (Since God was everywhere, "He" had to withdraw to make room for our physical world.) Judaism views the role of humankind as one of assisting God to return from his self-imposed Exile. That's what motivated Isaac Luria and his followers to leap in the fields of Tsfat in the Galilee every Friday at sundown. They felt every mitzvah they accomplished brought God one step closer to "Him"self. It is a theology rooted in Exile.
Kafka toyed with the Kabbalistic strains of Judaism throughout his life, but I think he ultimately gave up and looked at the vast metaphor as just that: a metaphor, not unlike the new metaphors being bandied about by Mr. Freud in yet another Jewish attempt to divine the essence of reality.
As much as he sought the truth himself, Kafka was repeatedly flung back to the nihilistic panic that both informs and inspires his greatest works.
That's what I think anyway, but I'm probably just projecting.
