the dim-hallowed hall
conveys silent-bearded men
to an unheard-of room
where a lone figure
awaits judgement.
they knock and knock
but doors are all locked --
denied,
they scratch and pull their pointed beards
in frustrated fury.
inhuman squeals squirm
from keyholes
scraping shrieks wriggle
under doors
and men cover their ears
in pain.
. . . nervous coughs
break foggy silence
and steel-rimmed eyes
lower
to consult shiny quartz
chronographs.
men suddenly
hear their mothers calling . . .
and angrily
(but quickly)
retrot back down
the dim-hallowed hall.
